Book Beginnings | Friday 56 | Friday 50/50 | Blogger Hop || A Curse of Ash and Embers (Tales of the Blackbone Witches #1) by Jo Spurrier || Overrated/Underrated Series

Please join us over at RoseCityReader every Friday to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires. Please remember to include the title of the book and the author’s name.

This is a weekly meme hosted by Freda's Voice
These are the rules:
1. Grab a book, any book.
2. Turn to page 56, or 56% on your eReader.
3. Find any sentence (or a few, just don't spoil it) that grabs you.
4. Post it.
5. Add the URL to your post in the link on Freda's most recent Friday 56 post.

Synopsis:
A dead witch. A bitter curse. A battle of magic.
Some people knit socks by the fire at night. Gyssha Blackbone made monsters.
But the old witch is dead now, and somehow it's Elodie's job to clean up the mess.
When she was hired at Black Oak Cottage, Elodie had no idea she'd find herself working for a witch; and her acid-tongued new mistress, Aleida, was not expecting a housemaid to turn up on her doorstep.
Gyssha's final curse left Aleida practically dead on her feet, and now, with huge monsters roaming the woods, a demonic tree lurking in the orchard and an angry warlock demanding repayment of a debt, Aleida needs Elodie's help, whether she likes it or not.
And no matter what the old witch throws at her, to Elodie it's still better than going back home.

Book Beginning:
I sat on the rough stone wall, gazing down the dusty road and grinding my heel against the rocks. The hobnails in my boot squealed against the stone, making me wince, but in truth the sound was a fine match for my mood.

Friday 56:
Nothing happened. Not for long moments as the horse pounded along the road, the beast bellowing behind us and my heart thudding in my ears.

50/50 Friday is a new weekly link-up hosted by Carrie @ The Butterfly Reader and Laura @ Blue Eye Books.  Every week they have a new topic featuring two sides of the same coin - you share a book that suits each category and link up on the hosts' blogs.

This week's topic is; Overrated/Underrated Series. I love seeking out books that aren't super mainstream, and well known. I feel like I'm not as influenced into liking it if it's not as well known.

Overrated
I don't even know if this book has a big following or not, but I hated this book.

Underrated
The whole series really, this is just the most current book out in the series.

Q: If you haven't read a book in a while and someone asks about a character or the plot, can you recall the details?

A: Depends on how much I enjoyed the book.

  1. A Curse of Ash and Embers sounds like a book I would like. I'm going to add it to my TBR list.

  6. Embers and Ashes... sounds good! I also have to wonder if the author is playing on the success of another book with a similar name?

Enjoy your weekend! Here is mine!
