Synopsis:
After two hundred years of service, the heir to the empire is suspicious about his reassignment to active duty on the front lines of the Goblin War. His first assignment to rescue an outpost leads to a dead-end canyon deep inside enemy territory. Suspicion turns to dread and then sinks to despair when it’s discovered no such outpost exists. But whoever went to the trouble of making his death look like an accident didn’t know anything about the Seventh Sikaria Auxiliary Squadron he was assigned to. In the depths of an unforgiving jungle, a legend is about to be born, and the world of Elan will never be the same.

From Michael J. Sullivan, the New York Times, USA Today, and Washington Post bestselling author, a new adventure begins with the first book of the Rise and Fall trilogy. While set in the same world as Riyria and Legends of the First Empire, this is a standalone series, so no prior knowledge of the other books is required to enjoy it to its fullest.
********************

I finally got around to reading this. I initially planned to read this right after reading Legends of the First Empire because I was going to read this 'world' in chronological order, but changed my mind and read the first published work (Riyria Revelations). That ended up being a good idea, for me at least. Some events wouldn't have the same impact had I read this sooner.

It did take me what felt like forever to actually read this book. Because I didn't really like reading Sephryn's POV chapters. I wanted to skim/skip them, but there is a lot of plot relevance in those chapters, so I couldn't. I don't really know what it was about her chapters that I didn't like but I didn't enjoy reading them all that much. I guess her problem with her mother fed into how she perceived things in a way that I found annoying, but she kind of was throwing herself a pityparty when she really should have found a way to move past it at this point. Maybe talking to and visiting her father could've helped her.
I liked reading Nolyn's chapters. While he also had a not great relationship with one of his parents as well, at least in his case the parent he had a messy relationship with was still alive. I also just overall found his character more interesting, he was more proactive and less reactive in his situation.

One thing that I liked and disliked was getting POV chapters from Mawyndulë. I disliked them, because I hate that guy. As an antagonist, he's great. But he just sucks as a 'person'. He's almost 2 thousand years old, but acts like a child. Bro needs to take a nap or something. Since I read Riyria Revelations, I know what happens to his character but he's such an annoying whiny character. The other POV chapter was from a side character called Arvis, even though she is a side-side character she plays a pretty important role in the story but we don't learn a whole lot about her by the end of the story. I can't make any connection to any other characters in the other series with her. She may not have a connection to anyone else, but she's still mostly a mystery.

I have the next book on hold at the library, and I look forward to reading more of this world.
