Book Beginning | Friday 56 | Blogger Hop || Furies of Calderon (Codex Alera #1) by Jim Butcher

Please join us over at RoseCityReader every Friday to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires. Please remember to include the title of the book and the author’s name.

This is a weekly meme hosted by Freda's Voice
These are the rules:
1. Grab a book, any book.
2. Turn to page 56, or 56% on your eReader.
3. Find any sentence (or a few, just don't spoil it) that grabs you.
4. Post it.
5. Add the URL to your post in the link on Freda's most recent Friday 56 post.

This finally came in from the library. While I do like his Butcher's Dresden Files, there is just something, for lack of a better word, weird about how he writes about her female characters. I just want to see if it's a character choice since Dresden is written in first-person, and even though I just started this (Im still on chapter one) seems to be written in third.
Also, this book sounds like it might be something I enjoy more, plot wise. Granted, I also haven't read that many of the Dresden Files, only 3 of the 15.

Synopsis:
For a thousand years, the people of Alera have united against the aggressive and threatening races that inhabit the world, using their unique bonds with the furies - elementals of earth, air, fire, water, wood, and metal. But in the remote Calderon Valley, the boy Tavi struggles with his lack of furycrafting. At fifteen, he has no wind fury to help him fly, no fire fury to light the lamps. Yet as the Alerans' most savage enemy - the Marat horde - returns to the Valley, Tavi's courage and resourcefulness will be a power greater than any fury, one that could turn the tides of war.

Book Beginning:
Prologue
The course of history is determined not by battles, by sieges, or usurpations, but by the actions of the individual.

Friday 56:
Tavi remained where he was, hardly daring to breathe.

Q: Have you ever participated in a book tour?

A: Yes, a number of them when I was in my earlier blogging days, I have a page her for them. I haven't had time to these days. Also, I am more picky about the books I want to promote. There were some early on that I wish I had done more research on before promoting them. But I was trying to gain traction to my blog so I didn't think about doing that.

  1. It's always frustrating when you get a book for review and you don't like it, isn't it? It's one reason why I tend to accept only books already on my reading list for review.

  2. I've not read any Jim Butcher books but have a couple here somewhere... I should though, I just know I'd enjoy it! Happy weekend!

  3. I only agree to participate if our team is going to review a book and I've backed out of tours where we couldn't endorse a book...

  4. I've been lucky with my book choices for tours. It's always a worry though!

    Have a great weekend!

  5. I like the first line. I do participate in blog tours but cut way back from last year. Like you, I was trying to get traction for my blog and that is not really where my visitors come from. Plus, I just don't have time for that many.

  6. I've read the first couple of Dresden Files books, keep meaning to go back to them and have put Storm Front back on my TBR. And Furies Of Caldron sounds really interesting so I'll have to see if my library has it - thank you!
