Picking up just a few months after A Reaper at the Gates left off...
The long-imprisoned jinn are on the attack, wreaking bloody havoc in villages and cities alike. But for the Nightbringer, vengeance on his human foes is just the beginning.
At his side, Commandant Keris Veturia declares herself Empress, and calls for the heads of any and all who defy her rule. At the top of the list? The Blood Shrike and her remaining family.
Laia of Serra, now allied with the Blood Shrike, struggles to recover from the loss of the two people most important to her. Determined to stop the approaching apocalypse, she throws herself into the destruction of the Nightbringer. In the process, she awakens an ancient power that could lead her to victory--or to an unimaginable doom.
And deep in the Waiting Place, the Soul Catcher seeks only to forget the life--and love--he left behind. Yet doing so means ignoring the trail of murder left by the Nightbringer and his jinn. To uphold his oath and protect the human world from the supernatural, the Soul Catcher must look beyond the borders of his own land.
He must take on a mission that could save--or destroy--all that he knows.

**********

I was not prepared for this book. It has taken me a couple of days to gather myself enough to write this review. This book took me through it. I was anxious, scared more than once for all the main characters. I got mildly spoiled for the some of the character's fate, but it didn't ruin my enjoyment or lessen the anxiety I got for the same characters while reading this.

This was honestly the perfect ending to the series. There are a number of character deaths that really hit me, and an unexpected meeting that had me in tears that made reading the scene really hard. But even though things are very, very sad (especially for one character, if you read this you know who I'm talking about) I feel like where everybody ended up in a place that makes sense for their character, no matter how much it hurts.

There were a lot of things that were revealed in this book that I was blessedly not spoiled for that surprised me, again not going to say what because spoilers. This is a series I can see my self re-reading over and over. Sabaa Tahir has a way of writing characters and weaving a world that I don't see often in YA. She has become an auto-buy author. I will be buying this series for my birthday so I can re-read it.

This book was full of ups and mostly downs. This book and series is categorized as YA, but it could easily be shelved as Adult. I know this series is very popular with YA readers, but I really think that fans of Adult fantasy will enjoy it as well. I think in part what makes me feel this way is that all the characters are adults through the bulk of the series. Laia is 17 at the start of the series but I think 2-3 years pass by the end of it. And she is the youngest of the POV characters.

It is so hard to talk about this book and not spoil anything. This was a fantastic finale, and I can't wait to read what she writes next. I already have All My Rage on the waitlist at the library.
