 Slippers And Thieves
Author: Christina Bauer
Series: Fairy Tales of the Magicorum #4
Genre: Urban Fantasy/Retelling/YA
Publisher: Monster House Books
Publication Date: November 26th, 2019
Edition: Kindle

Synopsis:
Years ago, Elle ― never call her Cinderella ― escaped her evil step-family in order to build a new life for herself in Manhattan. Today, Elle’s awful past is a distant memory. In fact, Elle even attends West Lake Prep, an exclusive high school where regular humans mix with members of the Magicorum, such as fairies, shifters and witches. Although she still must live in hiding from her evil step-family, Elle always has found ways to get whatever her heart desires.
That is, until Alec Le Charme. Sure, Alec is the heir to the Le Charme dynasty of high-end jewelers, but he's also kind, charismatic, and has a knee-melting smile.
Long story short, Elle has fallen for Alec, hard. Unfortunately, thanks to Elle’s evil step-family, the Le Charme heir is absolutely off-limits. In fact, if Elle and Alec so much as kiss, it could start a magical chain reaction that would end in powerful factions of witches and wizards going to war. As a result, Elle and Alec vow to stay friends, no matter what. Then West Lake Prep holds a masquerade ball. Identities get mixed up and forbidden kisses are finally shared.
Time for the Magicorum to go to war, and for Elle to confront her hidden past in ways she never thought possible.
*****
It's been a while since I've read the previous books in this series, but when NetGalley had the whole series available to read I took the chance to revisit this world. These books are technically YA, but read a little young closer to Middle Grade at times. The characters are 18 for most of the book, which makes the tone feel off at times. They don't behave young, just the writing style suits a younger audience. The author uses a lot of page time reminding you of things they recently stated in the narrative, and it can get repetitive at times.

These books are set in a semi-fantasy world. While there are aspects that are completely original to the world created for these books, there are things from our world that are used here that in some ways take me out of the world crafted. Little things are mentioned like Google and Starbucks. While they are little things, they are big companies and don't exactly add anything to the world for me.

I like Elle and Alec, they make tough but smart decisions. They don't make rash choices, and they at least try to think things through.
I'm curious where this story is headed. The cliffhanger ending is interesting. And I hope things work out for the heroes of the story. The edition I read was part of a bind-up of books 1-5, this is my review of the fourth book.
