Book Beginning | Friday 56 | Blogger Hop || A Torch Against the Night (An Ember in the Ashes #2) by Sabaa Tahir

Please join us over at RoseCityReader every Friday to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires. Please remember to include the title of the book and the author’s name.

This is a weekly meme hosted by Freda's Voice
These are the rules:
1. Grab a book, any book.
2. Turn to page 56, or 56% on your eReader.
3. Find any sentence (or a few, just don't spoil it) that grabs you.
4. Post it.
5. Add the URL to your post in the link on Freda's most recent Friday 56 post.

Synopsis:
Elias and Laia are running for their lives. After the events of the Fourth Trial, Martial soldiers hunt the two fugitives as they flee the city of Serra and undertake a perilous journey through the heart of the Empire.
Laia is determined to break into Kauf—the Empire’s most secure and dangerous prison—to save her brother, who is the key to the Scholars’ survival. And Elias is determined to help Laia succeed, even if it means giving up his last chance at freedom.
But dark forces, human and otherworldly, work against Laia and Elias. The pair must fight every step of the way to outsmart their enemies: the bloodthirsty Emperor Marcus, the merciless Commandant, the sadistic Warden of Kauf, and, most heartbreaking of all, Helene—Elias’s former friend and the Empire’s newest Blood Shrike.
Bound to Marcus’s will, Helene faces a torturous mission of her own—one that might destroy her: find the traitor Elias Veturius and the Scholar slave who helped him escape…and kill them both.

Book Beginning:
How did they find us so fast?
Behind me, the catacombs echo with angry shouts and the screech of metal. My eyes dart to the grinning skulls lining the walls. I think I hear the voices of the dead.

Friday 56:
This time, I find myself sitting on the Forest floor, warmth from a fire driving the chill from my bones. The Soul Catcher sits across from me, patiently feeding logs to the blaze.

Q:  If you read a print book after reading a few e-books, do you find yourself tapping the bottom of the page so it will turn?

A:  Something similar happens, not for turning the page but when I don't know what a word means I've tapped it, like I do on my kindle, for the definition.

  1. I haven't read any of the books from this series, but I've heard a lot of good things about them. I like the quotes. Have a great weekend! :-)

  2. I think I remember you featuring the previous book from this series and this continuation just has me more intrigued! And yes, the dictionary function is so useful that I wish it was an option with print books as well! I hope you have a lovely weekend :)

  4. I read the first book in this series in 2015. I really should reread that one and carry on with the series. It certainly sounds exciting. This week I am spotlighting a book from deep in my TBR pile - More Than Fiends by Maureen Child. Happy reading!

Surprisingly, I haven't done that with a print book - not yet anyway!
