Book Beginning | Friday 56 | Blogger Hop || The Shadow of What Was Lost (The Licanius Trilogy #1) by James Islington

Please join us over at RoseCityReader every Friday to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires. Please remember to include the title of the book and the author’s name.

This is a weekly meme hosted by Freda's Voice
These are the rules:
1. Grab a book, any book.
2. Turn to page 56, or 56% on your eReader.
3. Find any sentence (or a few, just don't spoil it) that grabs you.
4. Post it.
5. Add the URL to your post in the link on Freda's most recent Friday 56 post.

I'm playing a little bit of catch-up with reading books I already own. I cut back on the books I request from the library. Mostly just manga, other than the third Mistborn book, since I read manga so quickly. And as of now, I have only two books from NetGalley to read, I think I'm technically not supposed to share snippets from those books, since they aren't out yet. I don't know when I'll actually get to this one. Probably after I finish The Way of Kings.

Synopsis:
It has been twenty years since the end of the war. The dictatorial Augurs—once thought of almost as gods—were overthrown and wiped out during the conflict, their much-feared powers mysteriously failing them. Those who had ruled under them, men and women with a lesser ability known as the Gift, avoided the Augurs' fate only by submitting themselves to the rebellion's Four Tenets. A representation of these laws is now written into the flesh of any who use the Gift, forcing those so marked into absolute obedience.
As a student of the Gifted, Davian suffers the consequences of a war fought—and lost—before he was born. Despised by most beyond the school walls, he and those around him are all but prisoners as they attempt to learn control of the Gift. Worse, as Davian struggles with his lessons, he knows that there is further to fall if he cannot pass his final tests.
But when Davian discovers he has the ability to wield the forbidden power of the Augurs, he sets into motion a chain of events that will change everything. To the north, an ancient enemy long thought defeated begins to stir. And to the west, a young man whose fate is intertwined with Davian’s wakes up in the forest, covered in blood and with no memory of who he is.

Book Beginning:
Lightning.
For a moment the waters of Eryth Mmorg were lit, roiling and churning as through a great knife had plunged deep into the pool's murky heart.

Friday 56:
Davin nodded and was about to say more when he caught movement from the corner of his eye.

Q: Have you ever gotten a book signed by the author?

A: Sort of. I've never been to a signing event, I don't like crowds. But I bought a book at Barnes and Noble and when I got hope and cracked it open it was signed.  My copy of A Torch Against the Night by Sabaa Tahir.

  1. Sounds like another great read! Also clearly you have a lot more self control on NetGalley than I do, my shelf is buckling! Admittedly I am also not the biggest fan of big crowds but I've only had a few books signed at talks/lit festivals. I hope you have a lovely weekend :)
