I enjoyed this book far more than I thought I would. The romance was believable, I liked the characters, the side characters actually got some development and attention that didn't leave them as cardboard backdrops for the MCs to stand in front of.

The world building well done, though one aspect took some getting used to. Instead of years used as a passage of time, turns was used. Beyond that I was able to really immerse myself in the world. The stakes felt real, and I cared about the characters.

The romance is a huge part of the story even from the prologue when the two MC's first met as children (or littles as the book calls them). Their exact ages were unclear, but if I had to guess the FMC was maybe 12 and the MMC was closer to 14 or 15 in the prologue. Making them 22/25 when they meet again for the rest of the story. That was a bit why turns/years was confusing for me at first.

Their nicknames, Serpent and Songbird, for each other during the story were cute and fit with the theme for their role in each other's story and tied it back to when she read him stories when he was her family's captive in the prologue.

I already have books 2 & 3, also from NetGalley, to read and I've already started the second book. Hopefully I get approved for the fourth book because I am invested in this world and the characters.
