Synopsis:
Tell me, little butterfly, what would you do for love?
In the wake of a crushing defeat, Tisaanah and Maxatarius have been ripped apart. Tisaanah is desperate to rescue Max from his imprisonment, even as her people’s fight for freedom grows more treacherous. But within the walls of Ilyzath, Max’s mind is a shadow of what it once was… leaving his past a mystery and his future at the mercy of Ara’s new, ruthless queen.
Meanwhile, in the Fey lands, Aefe has been dragged back into this world by a king who vows to destroy civilizations in her name. But even as her past returns to claim her, her former self is a stranger.
Tisaanah, Max, and Aefe are thrust into the center of a cataclysm between the human and Fey worlds. The unique magic they share is key to either winning the war, or ending it.
But that power demands sacrifice. Tisaanah may be forced to choose between love and duty. Max cannot forge his future without confronting his past. And Aefe must decide between reclaiming who she was, or embracing who she has become.
The choices they make will either reshape this world forever…or end it..
In the harrowing finale of the War of Lost Hearts trilogy, a tale of romance, magic, vengeance, and redemption comes to a close.

It has taken far longer than I want to admit to read this book. Not from lack of enjoyment, I honestly have no idea why it took me as many months to read it as it did. I read more than half of it in a few weeks, then I put it down and only just now finished it in a matter of days. But here we are, I have finished this series and I thoroughly enjoyed it. As I was finishing it, the series seems to have been picked up by traditional publishing, and they got new covers, that I quite like. But the cover I'm using for this review is for the one I read.
This book felt very long. It clocks in around 700 pages, which is long but not the longest book I've read. There are over 100 chapters in this book which I think plays into why it feels longer. Some of the chapters were a little redundant. Most of the time the chapters jumped between the POV characters, but a few times multiple chapters in a row followed the same character, and I think those chapters should've been combined. Maybe that is something that was or will be "fixed" in the newer publication?
Aefe's chapters were often the least enjoyable to read. Her anger and pain here understandable, and earned, but she often was too lost in her own selfishness for revenge for too much of the book. She was ready to accept death at the end of the previous book, it seemed that she was ready to let go of her anger when she sacrificed herself to save Tisaanah, but she so quickly went back to being angry. Kind of backpedaling on her character growth from her time being tied to Tisaanah, the first person to actually relate to what she'd been through and helped her, from what I understood, heal from what she had been through.
Most of Max's chapters were kind of boring. At least at first. That did have a lot to do with him being in that magical prison, and not having most of his memories. But once he was out, things in his chapters got more interesting. Him remembering what he lost, and reliving the pain of that loss was heartbreaking. While I understand his brother's, Brayan, reaction to learning the full 'how' their family died, I still don't know if I like him. There's a lot about his character that I just don't like. He's a little self-righteous, and a little selfish. He didn't want to help stop the tyranny, and he didn't seem to express regret for his part in why Tisaanah lost her homeland and family, even if it was indirectly.
Reading this series though, has made me far more interested in reading more of this author's books. I think her world building is crafted very well, and she I like the way she writes characters. None of them are fully good or bad. Everybody is a little bit gray.
