Synopsis:
Against all odds, Brynn and Cenric have made a life for themselves in the rugged land of Ombra. The young lovers are thriving, and the shire is flourishing under their rule, but kings do not forget the favors owed to them.
Years ago, Cenric was given the warriors to retake his ancestral homeland by the warlord who united the fractured Valdari islands into a single kingdom. Claiming friendship, the warlord turned king now invites Cenric and Brynn to Valdar as his guests for the largest gathering of the year.
Not wishing to offend him, Cenric and Brynn accept, but quickly realize that it is not mere friendship that the Valdari king wants. Caught in a web of ambition, lies, and tangled oaths, Brynn and Cenric soon realize that all is not well in Valdar and there are secrets even its king does not know.
When new intrigue awakens an ancient evil, Brynn and Cenric must fight to protect the things they have come to love and the very existence of not one, but two kingdoms.
The much-anticipated sequel to Tears of the Wolf from Elisabeth Wheatley.

I'm really glad that I've gotten back into the groove of enjoying reading and reviewing. It's been quite the year.
Elisabeth Wheatley is quickly becoming a favorite author. She writes characters and worlds that feel real while maintaining the fantastical elements. They aren't just set dressing. The fantasy elements are part of the world and feel baked in. While this is a prequel spin-off of Daindreth's Assassin, it feels like a new world that doesn't rely on reading that series first, it adds to it if you read that first, but you don't need to.
Brynn and Cenric are peak when it comes to romantic couples. They lean on each other, they trust each other, and they both unabashedly love each other. They are both willing to throw down and sacrifice for each other. Brynn has this calm strength to her that is missing from other FMC's in both Romantasy and Fantasy Romance. She can and will kill anyone who threatens those she cares for, but she'd rather not.
Cenric is almost too noble for his own good. He had a little too much faith that his cousin and former king would treat his wife with the respect that he gives other women. His heart is in the right place, he just doesn't realize that other men around him aren't as respectful. But when he realizes this he is more than willing to throw down to protect her. Snapper and Guin, are the best psychic dogs, and nobody can convince me otherwise. It's really cute how Guin refuses to talk to Cenric, but will respond through Snapper.
The over all plot for this book, I wasn't sure where it was headed. I was tense during many parts of the book. I wasn't sure how our characters were going to get out of the mess they found themselves in. I also don't really know what the interconnecting plot for this series is supposed to be yet. This series is loosely connected to the Daindreth's Assassin series, same world, just a few centuries in the past. And that series had a very clear over-arcing plot. This book doesn't have a clear one yet. I am really looking forward to the next book in this series.
