Bulk Review: Manga & Graphic Novels pt. 9

I haven't read as much manga in the second half of the year as I did in the first half. Which is what I was trying to do. I still have a lot of novels I want to read hopefully I can get through some of them before the end of the year.

----------
Romantic Killer by Wataru Momose
Vol. 1 - 4 (Read July 8 - 11)
This short manga was so much fun. It's the most ridiculous story I've ever read. The whole series is in full-color as well.
It's about a girl who has very limited connections to the people around her. She chooses to spend her time playing video games and hugging her cat until one day a fairy... thing, shows up and forces her into a dating-sim type of life where the main character gets forced into proximity with three attractive boys at school where she fights it tooth and nail. It really leans into the Shojo tropes in a comedic way. I highly recommend it if you enjoy Shojo, or even if you don't.

----------
Under the Oak Tree by Suji Kim
Vol. 1 - 2 (Read July 15 - 17, Oct. 6-8)
I first heard about this book when I saw people sharing the novel version of this story, but when I found out it was a Webtoon first I wanted to check it out. Thankfully my library has it, so I borrowed it and gave it a read. It's, interesting. It does rely on a lot of Romantasy tropes, but in a much better way. The MMC (Riftan) is smitten with the FMC (Maximillian), but because of a lifetime of trauma and abuse from her father, she doesn't notice or realize how much he cares for her. It could be annoying to some people that she takes a long time to notice that he doesn't hate her. But I see this as a very slow-burn, for her, but I like the "he fell first" trope. Into the second volume, she really starts to grow as a person and becomes more comfortable in her role, but remains worried that he will grow tired of her.

----------
I loved this volume. And now that I'm all caught up with the ones that are out (and translated) I have to wait a while for more. But I am excited and looking forward to reading them, and for season 2 of the anime.

----------
Bug Wars: Book One by Jason Aaron
Vol. 1-6 (Read Sept. 26)
I got this book from NetGalley, Releases on October 21st.
This was a strange story, it was a wild ride from start to finish. When I first heard about this comic, the thing that came to mind for me was Grim-dark FernGully.
It's a dark and gritty story about two brothers who are dealing with their father's passing in very different ways. Even though it's been over 10 years since he died, the way he did left them both scared in different ways. One brother clings to the bugs their father loved with a similar passion, while the other hates bugs more than anything else.
This book leaves on quite the cliffhanger for things to come. And while I'm not sure if this story is for me in the long-run I am glad I read it. This just has a lot more gore than I prefer.

----------
Why does manga continuously have better written contemporary romances than western novels? A cast of well-rounded complex characters with charm. Risa is a girl in cram school, more or less living on her own as her mother works all the time and her father doesn't seem to be in the picture (not revealed why in this first volume). As she's walking home one night she see's a boy who had been recently beaten up and gives him her spare umbrella and the address to a local hospital where he can get treatment. From there they keep bumping into each other and offering up help each time in various ways. It's a very cute story right now of two young people who seem to both respect each other. There is a level of hinted attraction, but that's all it is for now. I do hope my library gets the rest soon.
