This is a post I was thinking of making later this week, but I can do it now for this freebie topic. There has been a few* books I have started and DNF'd in the past 3-4 months. That I want to share. Some are a permanent DNF and a couple are DNF for now. Either way, I have shared some of them as books I was "currently reading", and then DNF'd.
DNF for now
I have picked up and put this book down so many times. I just keep not being in the mood to read it. I think if there hadn't been such a long gap between when this book came out the previous book I wouldn't be having this problem. Even though I read the novellas that take place between the two books to avoid that issue. I just need to dedicate a month/week and read it.
I've read three books in this series, and I own up to book 5. But I keep hearing how the series gets kind of 'meh' since the author focuses a lot on the twins. And while I like their characters, I don't want or need to read another book about them and I know book 4 is about them again. I just need somebody to tell me how amazing the rest of the series is and I will pick it back up.
I just got sidetracked with other books. It's on my kindle, I 'll get back to it eventually. Probably. I might have to start it over though.
Permanent DNF
This book was not working for me at all. I think I went in with different expectations, which usually isn't a problem, but I also didn't really care about any of the characters. Which matters in a character driven story.
This book wasn't for me. I struggle with Sci-Fi books already, it never grabs my attention for long. While this book was giving me FireFly vibes, the characters just weren't as engaging for me as the ones from that show. I do plan on reading some of her other works though since I love her writing.
I think the point I knew I was going to DNF this book was pretty early on. I think in just the past year or so I stopped liking YA as much. And this book is very typical YA. Granted it was published six years ago. But even in 2016 the tropes used in this book were tired.
This one had promise, unfortunately, it was a slog to read. Things kept getting introduced and nothing was being explained in a way that made sense. I also hated every single character, nobody had any redeeming qualities.
Jim Butcher
I think as an author, his writing is just not for me. I was enjoying his Codex Alera series, but with recently being put in such a massive reading slump after forcing my way through Summer Knight, I don't think I can do it anymore. Reading his books feels like a chore, because so many people love his books that I thought I should read them, but I think it's time to just accept that his books aren't for me. I might finish up the Codex Alera series since I only have two left to read. But I am done with the Dresden Files.
If I looked back on my 2020 reading list I DNF about 30 books. I just couldn't settle and I would flit from book to book not being to struggle at all to finish anything unless the book really captured me right away. Now I should go back and decide if I really want to try any of them again.
ReplyDeleteMy Freebie TTT post
I am trying to think of the last book I didn't finish. There has to be one or more but my mind is blanking. I haven't tried McGuire's Wayward Children series yet, but I hope to. It's just not one I am rushing to read because I have heard so many mixed thoughts on it. I was a little disappointed in the 3rd Ghost Roads book by her.
ReplyDeleteI recently DNF Daisy Jones and the Six. I may go back to it in the future, or just settle for watching the adaptation that is in the works. Sometimes it's hard to DNF a book that is super popular, because you feel like you're missing something. But not every book is for every person.

Sorry to hear that Becky Chambers' book wasn't for you. That has been on my TBR for a very long time now and I read one of her novellas earlier this year and absolutely loved it. But her full length novels kind of intimidate me for some reason. At least you know what works and doesn't work for you :) I'm the queen of saying I'll DNF something and never actually doing it 😂
ReplyDeleteA good idea for a freebie. I rarely DNF a book, but that is because I do a lot of Blog Tour books so always read to the end - not that any of them so far have made me want to DNF.
ReplyDeleteHave a great week.

I like your take on this topic. I have quite a few DNF that I may one day pick back up but more than likely they will stay DNF.
ReplyDeleteI didn't love YEAR ONE either. I thought I would, but no. It was pretty meh for me.
ReplyDeleteHappy TTT!
I think I've DNFd maybe 10 this year. But I powered thru a few that I probably should have given up on. In an effort to get through my 1000+ TBR, I think I have to start using DNF more often when things don't work for me. Have a terrific week.

I rarely DNF a book, but I find myself doing it more now that I'm older. There are way too many good books out there to force ourselves to finish one that's not working.
ReplyDeleteHere is our Top Ten Tuesday. Thank you!
I also put The Mask Falling on hold, I was in a bit of a weird reading mood last year and though I started it and got quite a way through, I put it down and never managed to pick it back up. I plan to before the 5th book is released, though it sounds like that may be a while.
