Please remember to include the title of the book and the author’s name.

This is a weekly meme hosted by Freda's Voice
These are the rules:
1. Grab a book, any book.
2. Turn to page 56, or 56% on your eReader.
3. Find any sentence (or a few, just don't spoil it) that grabs you.
4. Post it.
5. Add the URL to your post in the link on Freda's most recent Friday 56 post.

Synopsis:
Sixteen-year-old Deka lives in fear and anticipation of the blood ceremony that will determine whether she will become a member of her village. Already different from everyone else because of her unnatural intuition, Deka prays for red blood so she can finally feel like she belongs.
But on the day of the ceremony, her blood runs gold, the color of impurity--and Deka knows she will face a consequence worse than death.
Then a mysterious woman comes to her with a choice: stay in the village and submit to her fate, or leave to fight for the emperor in an army of girls just like her. They are called alaki--near-immortals with rare gifts. And they are the only ones who can stop the empire's greatest threat.
Knowing the dangers that lie ahead yet yearning for acceptance, Deka decides to leave the only life she's ever known. But as she journeys to the capital to train for the biggest battle of her life, she will discover that the great walled city holds many surprises. Nothing and no one are quite what they seem to be--not even Deka herself.

Book Beginning
Today is the Ritual of Purity.
The thought nervously circles in my head as I hurry toward the barn, gathering my cloak to ward off the cold.

Friday 56
I suddenly feel light-headed. Practically immortal? I don't want to remain undying forever, to live despised ad reviled as I am.

Q: Is reading a fixed Is part of your morning or evening routine?

A: I squeeze reading whenever I have downtime. Lately, that's been at night after my son is in bed.

  2. I've seen The Gilded ones and gosh, it has such a beautiful cover.

I read every night before I go to sleep. Even if it's only a page or two. Of course I tree to squeeze in as much reading time as possible in between as well. But it doesn't always happen though.

    Have a good weekend!

  3. Oooh, this book is on my TBR! I know very little about it, so that 56 snippet really grabs my attention! Can't wait to check it out. Hope you're enjoying it!

My reading time looks a lot like yours: in haphazardous snippets throughout the day and after the offspring is in bed. xD Gotta get it where you can, right?

    Here's my Friday post.

  5. I was just thinking about starting The Gilded Ones. Your post must be a sign. Or you read my mind. LOL

As I was reading readers' answers to this week's BBHOP question, it dawned on me how much my reading routine has changed in the last several months. I won't go as far to say the year because my reading was so sporadic for awhile after the pandemic hit. It took me a while to find a new rhythm. It slipped my mind when answering to mention the time I read with my daughter--I do that every day too. My reading used to be more fragmented in pre-pandemic days than it is now. I don't know if my current routine will last, but it's working for now. :-)

I hope you have a great weekend!

  6. When my children were young I got out of the habit of reading regularly, so I'm glad to hear you've managed to keep it going.
