Please join us over at RoseCityReader every Friday to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires. Please remember to include the title of the book and the author’s name.

This is a weekly meme hosted by Freda's Voice
These are the rules:
1. Grab a book, any book.
2. Turn to page 56, or 56% on your eReader.
3. Find any sentence (or a few, just don't spoil it) that grabs you.
4. Post it.
5. Add the URL to your post in the link on Freda's most recent Friday 56 post.

Synopsis:
In the violent urban jungle of an alternate 1828 Paris, the French Revolution has failed and the city is divided between merciless royalty and nine underworld criminal guilds, known as the Court of Miracles. Eponine (Nina) Thénardier is a talented cat burglar and member of the Thieves Guild. Nina's life is midnight robberies, avoiding her father's fists, and watching over her naïve adopted sister, Cosette (Ettie). When Ettie attracts the eye of the Tiger--the ruthless lord of the Guild of Flesh--Nina is caught in a desperate race to keep the younger girl safe. Her vow takes her from the city's dark underbelly to the glittering court of Louis XVII. And it also forces Nina to make a terrible choice--protect Ettie and set off a brutal war between the guilds, or forever lose her sister to the Tiger.

Book Beginning:
It is a time of famine, a time of hungering want that threatens to eat you from the inside out, leaving you good only to wait for the coming of death. And Death the Endless always comes.

Friday 56:
She has become a symbol he must destroy. Nothing will stop him... He will have his vengeance or lose the power he holds over us.

50/50 Friday is a new weekly link-up hosted by Carrie @ The Butterfly Reader and Laura @ Blue Eye Books.  Every week they have a new topic featuring two sides of the same coin - you share a book that suits each category and link up on the hosts' blogs.

This week's topic is Best/Worst Blogging Advice You've Received

Unfortunately (or fortunately), I don't think I've ever received any. I've never asked, and nobody has offered any.

Q: What is a book that has helped you get through your lowest point in life?

A: I wasn't much of a reader when I was my lowest point. I kind of dealt with it on my own.

  1. Wow! What an amazing cover! Also, is it inspired by Les Miserables in any way, or is the author just using the names from this book?

    1. Yes, it's a retelling based on the alternate history of the French Revolution failing.

  5. I've seen this one around. Part of me is interested to read it; however, I'm a bit hesitant since I like Les Miserables so much and the 'sequel' to it I tried once was so appalling it's made me wary of other sequels/spin-offs.
