Book Beginnings | Friday 56 | Friday 50/50 || The Girl at Midnight (The Girl at Midnight #1) by Melissa Grey || Best/Worst Read of April 2020

Please join us over at RoseCityReader every Friday to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires. Please remember to include the title of the book and the author’s name.

This is a weekly meme hosted by Freda's Voice
These are the rules:
1. Grab a book, any book.
2. Turn to page 56, or 56% on your eReader.
3. Find any sentence (or a few, just don't spoil it) that grabs you.
4. Post it.
5. Add the URL to your post in the link on Freda's most recent Friday 56 post.

This is a re-read. I first read it in 2015, I semi-recently got the rest of the series. And since it had been so long, I decided to reread it so I can finish the series.

Synopsis:
Beneath the streets of New York City live the Avicen, an ancient race of people with feathers for hair and magic running through their veins. Age-old enchantments keep them hidden from all but one human: Echo, a runaway pickpocket who survives by selling stolen treasures on the black market.
The Avicen are the only family Echo has ever known, so when a centuries-old war crests on the borders of her home, she decides it’s time to act. Legend has it that to end the conflict once and for all, Echo must find the firebird, a mythical entity believed to possess power the likes of which the world has never seen. It will be no easy task, though if life as a thief has taught Echo anything, it’s how to hunt down what she wants . . . and how to take it.

Book Beginning:
The Ala had gone to the library in search of hope. She walked through the stacks, one hand tucked into the pocket of her trench coat, the other trailing over the cracked spines of well-loved books and through dust collected on those lesser-loved ones.

Friday 56:
Caius nodded. "Yes," he said, voice cracking. The dream clung to his skin like a film. The fire blazed in its hearth, the smell of burning wood was a special kind of torture. "Yes, I'm fine."
  He was not fine.

50/50 Friday is a new weekly link-up hosted by Carrie @ The Butterfly Reader and Laura @ Blue Eye Books.  Every week they have a new topic featuring two sides of the same coin - you share a book that suits each category and link up on the hosts' blogs.

This week's topic is Best/Worst Read of April 2020

Best
Loved the ending, but I still want more

Worst
It was just 'meh'

  4. The Girl at Midnight sounds like a good one. Any book that starts in a library, right? That's too bad about Queen of Coin and Whispers because that cover is so striking. I am glad to see you enjoyed Immortal Reign. I'd like to read that at some point. I hope you have a great week.
