Book Beginning | Friday 56 | Friday 50/50 | Blogger Hop || Children of Virtue and Vengeance (Legacy of Orïsha #2) by Tomi Adeyemi | Favorite/Least Favorite Sci-Fi of 2019

Please join us over at RoseCityReader every Friday to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires. Please remember to include the title of the book and the author’s name.

This is a weekly meme hosted by Freda's Voice
These are the rules:
1. Grab a book, any book.
2. Turn to page 56, or 56% on your eReader.
3. Find any sentence (or a few, just don't spoil it) that grabs you.
4. Post it.
5. Add the URL to your post in the link on Freda's most recent Friday 56 post.

Edit: So... I was tired when I made this post, and completely spaced on adding the beginning and 56 Quote until I checked it this morning. It's been a heck of a week.

Synopsis
After battling the impossible, Zélie and Amari have finally succeeded in bringing magic back to the land of Orïsha. But the ritual was more powerful than they could’ve imagined, reigniting the powers of not only the maji, but of nobles with magic ancestry, too.
Now, Zélie struggles to unite the maji in an Orïsha where the enemy is just as powerful as they are. But when the monarchy and military unite to keep control of Orïsha, Zélie must fight to secure Amari's right to the throne and protect the new maji from the monarchy's wrath.
With civil war looming on the horizon, Zélie finds herself at a breaking point: she must discover a way to bring the kingdom together or watch as Orïsha tears itself apart.

Book Beginning:

I try not to think of him.
But when I do I hear tides.
Baba was with me the first time I heard them.

Friday 56:

She told me Orïsha needed me, that my work wasn't done. But bringing magic back only made things worse. The maji are worse off than before.

50/50 Friday is a new weekly link-up hosted by Carrie @ The Butterfly Reader and Laura @ Blue Eye Books.  Every week they have a new topic featuring two sides of the same coin - you share a book that suits each category and link up on the hosts' blogs.

This week's topic is Favorite/Least Favorite Sci-Fi of 2019. I don't read a lot of Sci-fi, Hope I have one that I like, it's the genre I struggle with finding books I love the most.

Favorite
Technically it's a Sci-fi book and I did really like it. But after learning that it was a trilogy and not a duology like I thought I've been reluctant to finish the series; since I've also heard some mixed things about it.

Least
It was just a bit of a letdown, I was pretty uninterested in a lot of what was going on. And the AI/virtual reality stuff didn't make a lot of sense to me.

Q: Tomorrow is Leap Year. Name one book being released in 2020 that you would prefer to skip.

A: I have been really out of the loop on what books are coming out since mid-2019. I've been playing catch-up with all my unread books for a year (doesn't help that I kept also borrowing books from the library and requesting books from NetGalley as well)

  1. It seems like your beginning and 56 snippet are missing? This is a great book to feature, though! The first one didn't work for me, so I probably won't read the second, but I know so many people love it.

The constantly requesting books from NetGalley thing is a mood. xD Even though I also have plenty of books to catch up on LOL.

    Here's my Friday post.

  3. The cover looks very voodoo to me, so I wouldn't have given this a second look. I'd love for everyone to check out my blog today . . . https://lisaksbookthoughts.blogspot.com/2020/02/its-cozy-food-friday-that-means-its_28.html

  4. Oh. I want to read the book CHILDREN OF VIRTUE...but I am worried that I've forgotten too much of the first book. Did you reread the first before starting the second? Have a lovely weekend. My Friday quotes from Red at the Bone

    1. Sometimes when I'm not sure if I remember enough of the previous book I sometimes read my own review, or spoiler reviews of that previous book to refresh my memory. But with this one, I felt that I remembered enough of it to jump into it.

  6. I've heard many people say this wasn't as good as book one, so I'll be interested to see what you think of it when you finish reading.

  7. Warcross sounded so good but so many people just didn't like it that I never picked it up, glad I choose that.

Thanks for linking up and have a great weekend!
