Friday 56 and Book Beginnings: The Assassin's Curse (The Assassin's Curse #1) by Cassandra Rose Clarke

This is a weekly meme hosted by Freda's Voice
These are the rules:
1. Grab a book, any book.
2. Turn to page 56, or 56% on your eReader.
3. Find any sentence (or a few, just don't spoil it) that grabs you.
4. Post it.
5. Add the URL to your post in the link on Freda's most recent Friday 56 post.

Please join us over at RoseCityReader every Friday to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires. Please remember to include the title of the book and the author’s name.

This is one of those books that could and should really have more books either set in the same world or more in the series. I read this book about a year before it got really popular, hope that doesn't make me sound like a tool, I really enjoyed both this book and it's sequel but was let down by the novellas set in this world. They were before the events of the main duology and didn't really add anything to the story in my opinion. Since I haven't found any new books to read, I figured I'd share a book that I might want to re-read soon.

Synopsis:
Ananna of the Tanarau abandons ship when her parents try to marry her off to another pirate clan. But that only prompts the scorned clan to send an assassin after her. When Ananna faces him down one night, armed with magic she doesn't really know how to use, she accidentally activates a curse binding them together.

Book Beginning:
I ain't never been one to trust beautiful people, and Tarrin of the Hariri was the beautiful man I never saw. You know how in the temples they got those paintings of all the gods and goddesses hanging on the wall above the row of prayer-candles? And you're supposed to meditate on them so as the gods can hear your request better? Tarrin of the Hariri looked just like one of those paintings. Golden skin and huge black eyes and this smile that probably worked on every girl from here to the ice-lands. I hated him on sight.
Thoughts:
I am not a fan of this character's name, but I love her attitude.

My 56:
It took some time for my nerves to smooth over, but I dragged myself up to standing and worked my way back to the inn. The innkeep from the night before was at the counter, and his eyes widened when he saw me, and he ducked into the room behind the counter. I was too shaken up to take any joy from it.
Thoughts:
I don't remember what happened before this scene that caused her to be shaken. But, if I get around to re-reading this sometime soon maybe I'll find out.

  1. There seems to be a rash of books set in the exotic middle east. Is this one a type of retelling of 1001 Arabian Nights? The cover makes me think of it.

  5. Lovely cover. I've not heard of this one. I'm curious about what happened to the character and why the innkeeper ran.
