Friday 56 and Book Beginnings: The Pages of the Mind (The Uncharted Realms #1) by Jeffe Kennedy

This is a weekly meme hosted by Freda's Voice
These are the rules:
1. Grab a book, any book.
2. Turn to page 56, or 56% on your eReader.
3. Find any sentence (or a few, just don't spoil it) that grabs you.
4. Post it.
5. Add the URL to your post in the link on Freda's most recent Friday 56 post.

Please join us over at RoseCityReader every Friday to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires. Please remember to include the title of the book and the author’s name.

I actually just started this book, like 10 minutes ago.

Synopsis:
An Orphan's Throne
Magic has broken free over the Twelve Kingdoms. The population is beset by shapeshifters and portents, landscapes that migrate, uncanny allies who are not quite human…and enemies eager to take advantage of the chaos.
Dafne Mailloux is no adventurer--she's a librarian. But the High Queen trusts Dafne's ability with languages, her way of winnowing the useful facts from a dusty scroll, and even more important, the subtlety and guile that three decades under the thumb of a tyrant taught her.
Dafne never thought to need those skills again. But she accepts her duty. Until her journey drops her into the arms of a barbarian king. He speaks no tongue she knows but that of power, yet he recognizes his captive as a valuable pawn. Dafne must submit to a wedding of alliance, becoming a prisoner-queen in a court she does not understand. If she is to save herself and her country, she will have to learn to read the heart of a wild stranger. And there are more secrets written there than even Dafne could suspect…

Book Beginning:
When histories tell of the glorious dawning of a new era, they typically focus on the grand events- wars won, tyrants deposed, glittering coronations. Much waving of pennants and joyous shouting.
Thoughts:
I am admittedly confused by this first small paragraph. Hopefully, things will become clearer as the book goes on.

56% on Tablet:
I huffed out a sigh of frustration. Conversing better with him only elevated our ongoing duel to another level. "I am more than my...."
Thrice-damn it, I didn't have the word. Instead I gestured to my body, then tapped my temple. "I am this also."
Thoughts:
From what I gathered reading the page to pick my 56, the person she is talking to speaks a different language than her.

  3. This sounds good. I'm intrigued by the idea of a librarian in a fantasy world. This week I am spotlighting Marked in Flesh by Anne Bishop. Happy reading!

  8. I agree with the first line. I do think that histories are recalled in that fashion.
