This is a weekly meme hosted by Freda's Voice
These are the rules:
1. Grab a book, any book.
2. Turn to page 56, or 56% on your eReader.
3. Find any sentence (or a few, just don't spoil it) that grabs you.
4. Post it.
5. Add the URL to your post in the link on Freda's most recent Friday 56 post.
Please join us over at RoseCityReader every Friday to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires. Please remember to include the title of the book and the author’s name.
Synopsis:
In space, you can't hide from temptation...
Nick-named Hardass by the new recruits, Leigh Alphin is captain of the Fighter Force of the battleship Valiant Knox. He’s honorable, straightforward, and hard as nails – except for the soft spot he has for a young woman he rescued off a transport under attack. Now that she’s one of his new recruits, it’s imperative he stop thinking about her in that way.
Especially now that the Knox has been secretly infiltrated by the enemy.
Mia Wolf’s new commanding officer is icy, no-BS, and completely gorgeous. His glances send heat searing through her. Neither of them can afford to make this mistake, yet desire takes hold, consuming them. For the first time, Leigh’s iron sense of honor falters as his heart fights for love… and against an enemy trying to destroy everything they hold dear.
Beginning:
Valiant Knox
In Orbit around Ilari, Brannon System
The blaring drone of the battle alarm echoed through the gym, drowning out the raucous conversation of soldiers blowing off steam while they worked out.
Thoughts:
Honestly, not the most engaging first paragraph in a book. But it didn't take long for things to pick up. This book is told from alternating POV's but is written in third person.
My 56:
"I'm behind since I missed out on those sessions. Captain Alphin and Lieutenant Brenner wanted to speak to me about it, and I'm sure they'll be here any second."
Steve stepped into the room, his movements unhurried. "Really? That's interesting, because I know for a fact that Captain Hard-Ass, along with Brenner, Lawler, and Rayne are playing their weekly poker game in the common room, and everyone knows they'll be there for hours. So what's your real reason for being here, Mia?"
Thoughts:
This is a little further into the book than I am right now. I am really looking forward to finding out who this "Steve" is and why he's so creepy.
Sounds interesting, but maybe not my type of sci-fi. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my blog!
I was just going to ask the genre of Damage Control but Lauren seems to have answered that for me. I guess I am not used to sci-fi having such an unusual cover. Is any part of it a romance?
ReplyDeleteThis book seems ok, not the usual type of sci-fi I would typically pick up, but interesting enough.
ReplyDeleteI'm wondering if this is a sci-fi story with romantic elements OR a romance with sci-fi elements! Either way, it sounds interesting. Hope you're enjoying it as you get into it.
ReplyDeleteMy Friday post features The Paragraph Ranch.
Love the expression "Captain Hard-Ass." LOL
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing...and for visiting my blog.
Hmm I'm night quite sure this is one for me! I do really like sci-fi reads, but somehow I'm not entirely grasped yet! I do like 'Captain Hard-Ass' though xD Thanks for sharing :) I hope you have a great weekend!

Whoops, getting caught in a lie is not good. Hopefully, the girl can think quick on her feet. Enjoy your weekend!
ReplyDeleteI like the 'real speak' in the 56.
ReplyDeleteHappy weekend!
I like sci-fi and sci-fi romance but there's not enough in the beginning or 56 to draw me in - I will have to check into this series more - here's my Book Beginnings & 56
ReplyDeleteYou always get tripped up when you lie. I'm curious and I like science fiction.
