Pretty in Black is written by Rae Hachton. It is a beautiful haunting love story about a girl named Ellie Piper and an immortal boy named Marcus Marble. Ellie is depressed after her sister is brutally murdered in her childhood home, and after all her friends abandon her, and her father bails. Leaving her with a mother and a step-father who do nothing but blame her for everything that goes wrong. She meets Marcus in the cemetery near her sisters grave after she tried to end her life, Marcus had been watching her for a while, and was already deeply in love with her, seeing her try and end her life caused him to save her. After bringing her back, and her thinking that she just dreamed of trying to end her life, they exchange some playful flirtatious banter, that ends with them kissing. A kiss that drew them to each other in an uncontrollable way. He feeling human for the first time in a century and her finally starting to feel happy again. As their love grows the people in both their lives tell them that they shouldn't be together, which for Ellie and Marcus is all the more reason to keep seeing each other.

Ellie finds out that she is "the chosen one" meant to slay Evermore's, though she seems to ignore this calling in the fist book, choosing to spend all her time with Marcus. The story is told in 2 parts, most of from Ellie's Pov, and roughly 1/4 of it from Marcus's Pov. Ellie mostly has to deal with the girls at school telling her to get over being sad and to stop spending time with Marcus, her drugged out mother and an abusive stepfather.
Marcus has to deal with the other Evermore's; Jillian, who seems to be obsessed with him, his twin sister Vivian who is worried about him, Micheal who is in love with him, and Nathaniel who is doing his best to look out for him, and keep Jillian and their leader, Zarfe, from finding out he's spending his time with a mortal rather than doing his duties as an Evermore.
Marcus ends up leaving Ellie in hopes that she can live a long and safe life.
This is just such a beautiful story, it took me a good five minutes after I finished it before I was even able to think of how to write this review. This story gave me goosebumps it was so good.
