Review:
This is one of those books that I feel like is mostly looked over but is one that I think more people should read. This book also covers some fairly dark subject matter, so Content Warning for abuse. I generally don't do that, but this one goes into more detail than other books I have read with a similar subject matter.
Lois and Lucas, are two wonderful characters, and both made some pretty stupid mistakes. Mostly in waiting too long to say anything about how they felt for each other. If either of them had said something sooner they all could have avoided a lot of heartache and pain.
Neither person was really the "bad guy" in this situation. You feel for both Lucas and Lois. At times more for Lois because of all that happens to her, but Lucas is not without his own issues. He loses his mother as a young teen, and as the second oldest with a decent age gap between him and his older sister, who is already in college when their mother passes, he is left taking care of all his younger brothers. The youngest is just a toddler when their mother passes. It leaves him with a lot of responsibilities, and sometimes he unintentionally makes some selfish decisions. Mostly spending time with his girlfriend last minute when he already made prior plans to spend time with Lois(Lane).
I am trying really hard not to give away any spoilers because the way what is going on with Lois and her boyfriend Cooper is revealed is a huge part of the last third of the book, and as a reader, you don't really find out exactly what is happening until the rest of the characters in the book find out. And it's a fairly huge reveal, even if you suspect what is going on you don't find out the whole of it until the rest of the characters do.
There's a turning point in this book when I wasn't sure how things were going to end. The first chapter takes place near the end, then the book does a flashback to when Lucas and Lois first met. About the first half of the book transitions between when they were kids to closer to present day, and once things kind of catch up, everything is "present day".
Not gonna lie, I got choked up a couple times while reading this book. I always kind of feel like a boob when a book makes me cry. Not really sure why, but it does.
I love all the characters in this book, except Cooper he's a dick and I hope he's not in any of other books in this series, and I can't wait to read them when they come out. I want to give all the Preston brothers a hug, they are precious and I adore them as characters. All so different from each other, and all wonderful.
