Friday 56 and Book Beginnings: The Star-Touched Queen by Roshani Chokshi

This is a weekly meme hosted by Freda's Voice

These are the rules:
1. Grab a book, any book.
2. Turn to page 56, or 56% on your eReader.
3. Find any sentence (or a few, just don't spoil it) that grabs you.
4. Post it.
5. Add the URL to your post in the link on Freda's most recent Friday 56 post.

Please join us over at RoseCityReader every Friday to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires. Please remember to include the title of the book and the author’s name.

Synopsis:
Cursed with a horoscope that promises a marriage of Death and Destruction, sixteen-year-old Maya has only earned the scorn and fear of her father's kingdom. Content to follow more scholarly pursuits, her world is upheaved when her father, the Raja, arranges a wedding of political convenience to quell outside rebellions. But when her wedding takes a fatal turn, Maya becomes the queen of Akaran and wife of Amar. Yet neither roles are what she expected. As Akaran's queen, she finds her voice and power. As Amar's wife, she finds friendship and warmth.
But Akaran has its own secrets - thousands of locked doors, gardens of glass, and a tree that bears memories instead of fruit. Beneath Akaran's magic, Maya begins to suspect her life is in danger. When she ignores Amar's plea for patience, her discoveries put more than new love at risk - it threatens the balance of all realms, human and Otherworldly.
Now, Maya must confront a secret that spans reincarnated lives and fight her way through the dangerous underbelly of the Otherworld if she wants to protect the people she loves.

Book Beginning:
Staring at the sky in Bharata was like exchanging a secret.

Thoughts:
I kind of love the opening to this book. I feel like it sets up things in an interesting way.

56% on tablet:
The beads of blood brimming on his palm. That kiss. Even the memory of him saving me. He was keeping me alive to kill me later.
Thoughts:
I just started this book so this is way ahead of where I am. I am really excited as to where this book is headed.

  4. This isn't one I'm familiar with but if it wasn't for the fact that I'm trying to avoid NetGalley like the plague that it is on my TBR I would definitely be rushing right over to request it! Some day I'm sure I'll stumble upon it and pick it up :)

  11. This book looks so good! Bonus points for diversity! Close-ish to qualifying for Book Riot's read harder challenge, but she is from the State, not Southeast Asia. Although her author profile states she is half-Filipina. You decide if that's close enough to count for you :).

  15. Pretty cover and opening. The 56 did not really call to me much though. Maybe I just need to read it in a broader context.
