Review:
"One Girl. One Boy. And the Masters of Darkness. See the Shadow Creatures. They are everywhere. But you can't run from the shadows or the Masters who control them.
Catherine has been born with a supernatural power called Darkness. The Masters of Darkness have found her and it's just a matter of time before someone claims her."

Review:

This book was something else entirely. I was expecting a dark-ish story considering the title, and some of the summary. But I was not expecting this. This book did start a little confusing, but it picked up when we see Catherine as a teen. Not so say that the earlier part was bad, it was just pretty confusing being told in third-person past tense.

Catherine has a really tough life and, the eerie supernatural aspects aside (as a child she could see and control shadows), there were times when it was hard to read this book in large doses. It was a little unnerving how many people in this world have a life like she does when she has to go back to living with her mother whom she never knew. I had to set the book down many times before picking it back up again.

Catherine's world is not something many people can deal with the way she does. Her mother is abusive and an alcoholic showing neither love nor compassion towards her daughter who she treats like a burden. Her only solace is her neighbor Nathan, the first boy to ever be kind to her and her only friend who she grew to love over the time they knew each other. All she wants is to escape, then a voice she barely remembers from childhood starts to invade her dreams offering what she wants most.

Nathan has loved Catherine for a while, but always afraid to try and breach that line from distant friendship to something more in fear of rejection. Catherine is a very closed off person that makes it hard to get close to her. He stays in the dead-end town waiting for the day she graduates so he can take her away from it all and start a life with her. Then a man in black shows up offering knowledge and power to obtain what he wants most in the world. Little does Nathan know they want the same thing.

There was a lot of really mysterious and creepy magical explanation in this book, though with the way things ended in this book I really want and hope there  is a sequel.

  1. Hearing the word creepy from you makes the chicken in me come out. I don't think this is a book for me.

    1. probably not, it touches on some really heavy topics, and lots of creepy appearances with monsters.
