Here are some of the things that make me not want to read a book.
1) Insta-love
This tired over-used trope needs to stop. It adds nothing to the story, it adds nothing to the plot, and it's unrealistic. I don't care if the book is about unicorn-dragons, I will buy those much faster than two people falling head over heels in love after meeting for 2 seconds.

2) Sports books
I don't even like sports in real life. I mean I played soccer in high school, but I wasn't very good. I never get entertainment from watching sports, so reading a book where that is the main driving point for the plot is not for me.
3) YA-Contemporary
I have read the genre before, and I do not enjoy it. While I mostly read YA-fantasy, I feel that those books have more mature characters than the ones in contemporary books. This is just my experience, there might be ones out there that aren't like this.
4) Comparing it to Any Other Series.
I am always let down. Books that have a synopsis that starts with "For fans of 'blank' and 'blank' series". They are never like those books. It is always a disappointment. More so when a book is compared to a TV show.
5) Too Much Sex
This is mostly a problem in NA books, I enjoy New Adult from time to time, but I find myself skipping over most of the sex. Which only becomes a "problem" for me when it lasts like... 5-6 pages. I feel that what I perceived as the actual plot suffers because of that.
6) Overtly Religious Books
I grew up in a very religious home, but as I've gotten older I have become more agnostic. I accidently agreed to be part of a book tour for a series and to review all three books for a series that was religious. I don't mind if a book has characters that are Christian but I feel that books that are about religion tend to get preachy and start to tell the reader they are a lesser person if they don't behave the way their Christian character does.
7) Bossy/Pushy Love Interest
I really hate reading a book where two people are in a relationship, or a budding relationship and the guy is bossy and is constantly telling her what to do, how to behave, etc. It bothers me. It bothers me, even more, when the girl listens to him while bitching about him telling her what to do. Whether they are a boyfriend or not, nobody has the right to demand that someone do anything, then berate them when they don't listen to their "advice". Seriously, are they their boyfriend or trying to be their father? Don't scold your S.O. like a child when they don't listen. It's condescending.
8) Thrillers/Horror
I don't like horror movies either. I don't like reading descriptive scenes about violence. I'm not a pacifist or anything, I just find it gross and not scary or entertaining.
9) Zombies
I just don't find them entertaining. I haven't read one that has really caught my interest.
10) Special Snowflake Characters
Another tired trope. I also feel like it's a cheap way to write a character and give them the skills or whatever to do whatever task needs to get done. Character is also often perfect at everything, never fails and in return never has to learn a lesson. They are just awesome and great at everything.

I agree on sports books. I just don't care for them. And horrors are a complete no go. I'm such a chicken!
ReplyDeleteI can't believe I didn't think of sports for my list today. I'm with you - I don't like to watch sports, read about sports, hear sports playing in the background, etc. Just not my thing.

ReplyDeleteI completely agree with sports books and overly religious books. I just can't do either, they bore me to death. I wouldn't say I can't read insta-love but I will say that if a book is too wishy washy, it makes me want to gag. There has to be some substance to the story.
