Friday 56 and Book Beginnings: Soleil (The Illumination Paradox #3) by Jacqueline Garlick

This is a weekly meme hosted by Freda's Voice
These are the rules:
1. Grab a book, any book.
2. Turn to page 56, or 56% on your eReader.
3. Find any sentence (or a few, just don't spoil it) that grabs you.
4. Post it.
5. Add the URL to your post in the link on Freda's most recent Friday 56 post.

Please join us over at RoseCityReader every Friday to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires. Please remember to include the title of the book and the author’s name.

My week has been insane. I forgot to do this last night. This is the next book I'm going to read after I finish the Bear and the Nightingale.
Review of Book One and Two

 Synopsis:
Losing her would send him spiraling into darkness.
With Eyelet gasping in his arms and a toxic storm threatening to annihilate the Commonwealth, Urlick must find a way to save his beloved, and fast. Out of the mist appears an unusual man, claiming to possess the power to heal Eyelet. The townspeople immediately label him a sorcerer and call for his death, but Urlick trusts the stranger. He whisks him off to the Academy where it becomes clear Eyelet is running out of time. She must drink her father’s antidote, or perish.
Together, Eyelet and Urlick brave the toxic woods to battle an Infirmed Flossie for the stolen necklace. In a race against time, they embark on a harrowing journey through the hellfires of Embers, where they meet up with the resurrected form of a familiar enemy—now the leader of the Dark World. Along the way, the pair unearth a sinister truth. Could the Vapours really be what they appear to be?
Is this the end of the known world?
Soleil is the third and final installment of the long-awaited Illumination Paradox Series. A swashbuckling, nail-biting, romantic adventure, filled with mechanical beings and puzzling happenings, with a shocking, otherworldly conclusion.

Author Note: This book contains an homage to Lewis Carroll and his infamous characters, especially Alice, who visited me from Wonderland as a child and spurred me on. These scenes are an intended nod to Carroll's original works (now in the public domain) which I dearly love, continue to be for me, an unyielding source of inspiration. To the creator, endless thanks. J

Book Beginning:
Prologue:
  Eyelet- Age Five
We descend the alabaster staircase into the marrow of the tallest bone, my hand clasped firmly inside my father's, him dragging me along.
Bones. That's what I call the buildings where my father works, because of the way they stick out of the earth- all smooth and white and jagged, like a body has come up out of the ground.
Thoughts:
slightly contradictory, smooth and jagged? Bah, I've come to expect some cheese with this series, I actually kind of like that it's  a little cheesy.

My 56:
C.L.
"Come on!" Masheck jerks his head to the right, swinging the lantern out in front of him. "I've got something to show you. Both of you." He eyes Parthena, who he's also dragged down here. She totters along behind us, not the most surefooted of the pack.
Thoughts:
As it's been a couple of years since I've read about these characters and I haven't actually started this book yet; I have no idea who any of these people are. I am looking forward to seeing how this story ends.
