Friday 56 and Book Beginnings: Gilded Cage (Dark Gifts, #1) by Vic James

This is a weekly meme hosted by Freda's Voice
These are the rules:
1. Grab a book, any book.
2. Turn to page 56, or 56% on your eReader.
3. Find any sentence (or a few, just don't spoil it) that grabs you.
4. Post it.
5. Add the URL to your post in the link on Freda's most recent Friday 56 post.

Please join us over at RoseCityReader every Friday to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires. Please remember to include the title of the book and the author’s name.

I received this ARC from NetGalley

Synopsis:
Not all are free. Not all are equal. Not all will be saved.
Our world belongs to the Equals — aristocrats with magical gifts — and all commoners must serve them for ten years. But behind the gates of England's grandest estate lies a power that could break the world.
A girl thirsts for love and knowledge.
Abi is a servant to England's most powerful family, but her spirit is free. So when she falls for one of the noble-born sons, Abi faces a terrible choice. Uncovering the family's secrets might win her liberty, but will her heart pay the price?
A boy dreams of revolution.
Abi's brother, Luke, is enslaved in a brutal factory town. Far from his family and cruelly oppressed, he makes friends whose ideals could cost him everything. Now Luke has discovered there may be a power even greater than magic: revolution.
And an aristocrat will remake the world with his dark gifts.
He is a shadow in the glittering world of the Equals, with mysterious powers no one else understands. But will he liberate—or destroy?

Book Beginning:
Prologue
   Leah
She heard the motorbike first, then the galloping horse-two distant points of noise in the darkness, converging on her as she ran
Thoughts:
I really like this opening.

My 56:
"If Gavar hit the fugitive, well, he's gone. But if it was an accomplice, he must still be in Millmoor. The clinics should be monitored," she told her father-in-law. "The healthcare staff questioned. And even if the injury wasn't grievous and the victim is tending to it himself managers and foreman should be instructed to keep an eye out. Residential-block staff need to watch for blood on the sheets or towels."
Thoughts:
Not quite here yet, but so far this book is okay. It's not 'bad' but it's just a little dull in my opinion. Almost halfway through the book and not a whole lot of anything that interesting has happened.

  1. I hope it picks up for you. Halfway through and not much happening isn't a positive sign. Awesome cover.

  3. It's one of those that sounds really good to me, but I completely agree if you are that far and nothing is happening, I would probably quit. I enjoy good fantasy stories but sometimes the world building gets out of control and the author forgets to tell the story. Good luck and I'm curious to hear what you think if you finish it. Great post!

  4. This sounds good. I'm sorry it isn't grabbing you. I'd probably abandon it. I have too many other choices to waste time on a book that isn't engaging me. I'm reading The Elizabeth Papers by Jenetta James this week. Happy reading!

  7. I'm curious about the world this author has created. The opening made me want to keep reading, but I'm sorry to hear that there's a "sagging middle." I hope it picks up soon.

  8. It stinks that a book with such an interesting premise (I've had a thing for class difference in novels lately) isn't picking up for you. Maybe it will after a bit. Happy reading!

  9. Oh no, I'm SO sorry to hear you're not finding this one real interesting so far--here's hoping it starts picking up soon! I requested this on Netgalley myself, but was declined...perhaps that's a good thing. Thank you so much for sharing, and here's hoping the rest of the read is enjoyable!

Happy book-ing to you in the near future! Here's my Friday 56 if you're interested in checking it out; no pressure or worries if you're not, though! Stay rockin', and happy Friday!
