Top Ten Tuesday: All About The Villains--Favorite Villains

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish.
To take part, just pick your top ten, and add the link here.

My list is not really in any order other than when I think of them as I go through the books I've read. I tend to like all villains fairly equally but for different reasons.

1. The Darkling, Grisha Trilogy by Leigh Bardugo
Possibly the most charismatic villain in a book I have read. There might be characters more charismatic than him, I just haven't read those books.

2. Queen Levana, Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer
This is a villain that I honestly pity. She really didn't start out evil, if you read Fairest you know what I'm talking about. She remained threatening through the whole series, which can be difficult when there are so many other characters

3. Lord Mayor Branch, Heartless City by Andrea Berthot
From the first time you meet this character you know he is up to something, it's just not clear exactly what that is. He is also a massive asshole, so it's not that surprising when what he has been doing is revealed.

4. Steelheart, Steelheart by Brandon Sanderson
He isn't really in the book that much, but it makes when he is all the more threatening. And this book is so incredibly written that you can't help but love all the characters, villain, and hero, alike.

5. Lord Voldemort, Harry Potter by JK Rowling
Basically the embodiment of Evil. But for a character that is all evil, he is so compelling and there is a lot of depth to his character. Something that was sadly left out of the 6th movie that shouldn't have been. The back story of his mother, who she was and how Tom Riddle Sr. became his father.

6. The Commandant, An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir
Just an all around heartless and ruthless commander. I don't remember her name past her title, and I am honestly too lazy to search through my copy to find out.

7. King of Adarlan, Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas
This guy is really easy to hate. He basically committed genocide and kind of enslaved the entire country. Everyone is either scared of or hates him. He is just awful.

8. Thiago (Aka: The White Wolf), Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor
I just really like his character. It's hard to say how many times his body was re-made. But I can't help but feel that when the war between the Chimera and the Seraph his heart was in the right place. But after so long he just became jaded and lost his sense of self. I want to sympathize with him. But his methods made him a villain. (Side note: this book has some of the best quotes of any book I have ever read)

9 and 10. Valentine and Sebastian Morgenstern, The Mortal Instruments by Casandra Clare
Two characters that are very charismatic and very different from each other, one is a little unstable, and one is very misguided. You can guess which is which.
Both these characters are very compelling and well written, but I think I like Sebastian a little more than Valentine. Sebastian(The real Jonathan Morgenstern) has a little more depth to his character than his father, in my opinion.

  1. The Darkling is the most charismatic villain I've ever read as well! He was probably my favourite thing about the Grisha trilogy!

  2. The Darkling seems to pop up a lot, and I like the sound of The Mortal Instruments villains. I haven't read those though...

  4. Steelheart is my favorite villain too! Although he's not in the book as much as I would have liked him too, he did affect the main character in so many ways. He was a a major contribution to the plot and character development. Now that the series is finished, I'm really missing his deviousness!

  6. Great choices! I have a feeling that The Darkling is going to be all over these lists, just because everyone LOVED to hate him ;) Same with Queen Levana, even though I am still only on Cress ;) Totally agree with The Commandant and the King of Adarlan too!
