Friday 56 and Book Beginnings: Throne of Glass (Throne of Glass #1) by Sarah J. Maas

This is a weekly meme hosted by Freda's Voice
These are the rules:
1. Grab a book, any book.
2. Turn to page 56, or 56% on your eReader.
3. Find any sentence (or a few, just don't spoil it) that grabs you.
4. Post it.
5. Add the URL to your post in the link on Freda's most recent Friday 56 post.

Please join us over at RoseCityReader every Friday to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires. Please remember to include the title of the book and the author’s name.

I'm doing a bit of a throwback this week. To the start of one of my favorite series/books.

Synopsis:
In a land without magic, where the king rules with an iron hand, an assassin is summoned to the castle. She comes not to kill the king, but to win her freedom. If she defeats twenty-three killers, thieves, and warriors in a competition, she is released from prison to serve as the king's champion. Her name is Celaena Sardothien.

The Crown Prince will provoke her. The Captain of the Guard will protect her. But something evil dwells in the castle of glass--and it's there to kill. When her competitors start dying one by one, Celaena's fight for freedom becomes a fight for survival, and a desperate quest to root out the evil before it destroys her world.

              Review
Book Beginning:
After a year of slavery in the Salt Mines of Endovier, Celaena Sardothien was accustomed to being escorted everywhere in shackles and at sword-point.
Thoughts:
This book has a pretty good opening. Not as engaging as the later books, but still pretty good. I read the prequel novellas before I started this book, but for people who hadn't read them first, this is a great way to get them curious about the hows and why she's been in these salt mines for a year.

My 56:
After a solitary supper, over which she contemplated all of her planned escape routes and how she might make more weapons for herself, Celaena paced through her rooms. Where were the other competitors being kept? Did they have access to books, if they wanted?
Thoughts:
One thing that I really love about Celaena is her love for reading. It's really the only thing I have in common with the character.

  1. I love that "where are the books" was one of her first thoughts! It would be my first thought in most situations!
I read the first book before I read the novellas as I was reading them as they were released and it definitely gave this books beginning a bit more punch I think!

  3. I've started with A Court of Thorns and Roses, but still haven't finished it. Although I've only heard great things of this author. Like the parts you shared and yes, I would also like to know if I can have access to books....! Happy weekend and here's my Friday Meets: http://marelithalkink.blogspot.co.za/2016/10/friday-meets-28-october-2016.html

  7. While I'm not AS in love with Sarah J. Maas as the rest of the reading world seems to be, I have enjoyed these books (the two I've read so far) and intend to try to finish out the series. Great choice for your 56--I also adore how bookish Celaena is!

Thank you so so much for sharing, and happy book-ing to you in the near future! If you're interested, my first Friday 56 post is here: The Twistrose Key

  8. I enjoyed this book when I read it last year, but I'm not a huge Sarah J. Mass fan like everyone else so I have yet to pick up the second book. Hopefully that will change sometime soon. haha
