Friday 56 and Book Beginnings: The Griever's Mark (Griever's Mark #1) by Katherine Hurley

This is a weekly meme hosted by Freda's Voice
These are the rules:
1. Grab a book, any book.
2. Turn to page 56, or 56% on your eReader.
3. Find any sentence (or a few, just don't spoil it) that grabs you.
4. Post it.
5. Add the URL to your post in the link on Freda's most recent Friday 56 post.

Please join us over at RoseCityReader every Friday to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires. Please remember to include the title of the book and the author’s name.

Thank goodness school is starting up soon, I have been absolute garbage about reading and posting this summer. Little guy starts school just after Labor Day, so I'll hopefully have more time to read and post then. I am still reading the same books I have been, so here is a book I read a while ago that I got from NetGalley, and really enjoyed. I've been looking/waiting for the sequel to be on NetGalley but it hasn't been. They also did a cover change, and I hate it. So the cover I am using is the cover that the book had when I read it.

Synopsis:
Astarti’s master controls her through a Leash, a bond of energy anchored deep within her. Despite being one of the few remaining Drifters, able to manipulate the energy world, she cannot break free. She knows her fate: she will serve until she dies, at which point her master will harvest her energy to augment his own.
Oh, yes, she’s done some bad things in her master’s name. She’s not asking for forgiveness. She expects you to hate her.
What she doesn't expect is Logan, a man meant to be her sworn enemy. A man with secrets as dark as her own.

Book Beginning:
My eyes slip to the Shackle, and I shudder. It rests like a coiled snake on the stone table, its links of pale bone like a kinked spine. The two cuffs touch each other, which I find somehow grotesque. I rub my wrist. Only once did I wear the Shackle, when I was seven, on the first day I entered the Drift. I am told it was originally a teaching tool; now it is used only for Lashing.
Thoughts:
I found this opening paragraph to be very compelling. It drew me into the story and made me want to find out as much as I could.

My 56:
We made it.
We're safe.
I am brushing the edge of the Wood, reaching for the answering touch of the trees, when my Leash burns white-hot.
Thoughts:
I have no memory of what's happening here. I kind of want to re-read this book now.

  1. I think we spoke about The Griever's Mark at one point. The beginning drew me in though and I want to know what is going on. I will have to add it to my list and get it eventually. Good luck getting back into reading. I am trying to find more time to read as well.

  2. Cute cover. After reading the synopsis and your teases, I can see why she changed it. Some hard core action fans may pass it by. I had to go to GR and check out the other covers.

  5. I hate it when I love the cover, and they change it. So annoying. This looks good, thanks for sharing. Here's Dead in the Water by Irna van Zyl, which I'll be reading this weekend.

  8. Since I rarely read fantasy, this probably isn't a book for me. However, I do like the opening. It makes me curious about the world this author has created.
My Friday post features BAREFOOT AT SUNSET.

  9. This sounds interesting and I have to say that I feel bad for her because of being bound like she is - it's not one of her choosing so that makes it really bad 0 hope she gets free - here's my Friday meme
