Friday 56 and Book Beginnings: The Winner's Curse by Marie Rutkoski

This is a weekly meme hosted by Freda's Voice

These are the rules:
1. Grab a book, any book.
2. Turn to page 56, or 56% on your eReader.
3. Find any sentence (or a few, just don't spoil it) that grabs you.
4. Post it.
5. Add the URL to your post in the link on Freda's most recent Friday 56 post.

Please join us over at RoseCityReader every Friday to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires. Please remember to include the title of the book and the author’s name.

Synopsis:
Winning what you want may cost you everything you love
As a general’s daughter in a vast empire that revels in war and enslaves those it conquers, seventeen-year-old Kestrel has two choices: she can join the military or get married. But Kestrel has other intentions. One day, she is startled to find a kindred spirit in a young slave up for auction. Arin’s eyes seem to defy everything and everyone. Following her instinct, Kestrel buys him—with unexpected consequences. It’s not long before she has to hide her growing love for Arin. But he, too, has a secret, and Kestrel quickly learns that the price she paid for a fellow human is much higher than she ever could have imagined.

Book Beginning
  She shouldn't have been tempted.
This is what Kestrel thought as she swept the sailors' silver off the impromptu gaming table set up in a corner of the market.

Thoughts:
This is a really simple way to introduce a character. It doesn't exactly reveal much in one sentence By the end of the page, and after she has spoken, you realize that she loves the strategy part of playing card games, which is a really important part of her character.

56% on tablet:
She should have stopped him. She would have wished herself deaf, blind and made of unfeeling smoke. She would have stopped his words of terror, longing. The way terror and longing had become indistinguishable.
Yet his hands held hers, and she could do nothing.
He said,  "I want the same thing you want."

  4. This has been on my TBR (partly because of the cover!) but the 56 is a little more angsty than I would have expected. Enjoy the read!

    1. It's really not that angsty, 'least it wasn't to me. It's a bunch of espionage and war. With a sprinkling of a romance.

  6. Sounds like she worries about what she should or shouldn't do! The story sounds good with lots of opportunity for conflict. I hope you enjoy it.

    1. I really enjoyed both the first and second book, I read them back to back. The second one has a lot more espionage than the first. The ending of the sequel kind of wrecked me a little. I am really nervous about how the third book will go.

    1. It's YA, so yes.

This book is so good, and the sequel just about destroyed me.
