Friday 56 and Book Beginnings: Firefight by Brandon Sanderson

This is a weekly meme hosted by Freda's Voice

These are the rules:
1. Grab a book, any book.
2. Turn to page 56, or 56% on your eReader.
3. Find any sentence (or a few, just don't spoil it) that grabs you.
4. Post it.
5. Add the URL to your post in the link on Freda's most recent Friday 56 post.

Please join us over at RoseCityReader every Friday to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires. Please remember to include the title of the book and the author’s name.

Synopsis:
They told David it was impossible--that even the Reckoners had never killed a High Epic. Yet, Steelheart--invincible, immortal, unconquerable--is dead. And he died by David's hand.
Eliminating Steelheart was supposed to make life more simple. Instead, it only made David realize he has questions. Big ones. And there's no one in Newcago who can give him the answers he needs.
Babylon Restored, the old borough of Manhattan, has possibilities, though. Ruled by the mysterious High Epic, Regalia, David is sure Babylon Restored will lead him to what he needs to find. And while entering another city oppressed by a High Epic despot is a gamble, David's willing to risk it. Because killing Steelheart left a hole in David's heart. A hole where his thirst for vengeance once lived. Somehow, he filled that hole with another Epic--Firefight. And he's willing to go on a quest darker, and more dangerous even, than the fight against Steelheart to find her, and to get his answers.

Book Beginning:
I watch Calamity rise.
I was six years old the, as I stood in the night on the balcony of our apartment. I still remember how the old air conditioner rattled in the window next to me, covering the sound of Father's crying. The overworked machine hung out over a plummet of many stories, dripping water like perspiration from the forehead of a suicidal jumper.

Thoughts:
I love this series. and I am already really looking forward to the third book. I actually kind of wish there were more than three books.

My 56 (56% on tablet):
"I'm not going to going to 'witness' it," I said pulling another strap tight. "I'm going to stop it."
"David--" Prof said over the line.
"Yeah, yeah," I spat. "Reckless heroism. I'm not going to just sit here."

  1. Is this a dystopian series? I might need to check it out. :)

    1. Yes, and it has powered people. They are the villains and non-powered people are the heroes.

  2. There is a teacher at my school who keeps telling me this is an amazing series. Guess I'd better check it out.

  3. I've read the first book in this series and, if I ever catch up on my review stack, plan to read this one too. This week I am spotlighting Public Enemies by Ann Aguirre. Happy reading!

  4. Amazing book, I do agree about wanting more then three books in the series. Even if Mr. Sanderson does the same thing he did with the Mistborn series I would take it.

  5. I love the beginning! This isn't a book I'd probably read on my own but I'm intrigued. I'll have to look for it at the library.

    1. Make sure to read the first book in the series, Steelheart, before. Other wise you might get a little spoiled about certain things.

    1. This series is so good. I was annoyed at myself after reading it for taking so long to read it.

  7. The description in the opening makes me want more, even though this isn't the type of book I usually read. Sounds like the author has lots of fans.
