Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Dissappointments

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish.

Last year, I read a lot of books, almost 300. And to say that some were not as good as I hoped, well that is kind of an understatement. This list is in no particular order.

*   *   *   *   *

1. The Fly House by Misty Provencher (Review)
The summary of this book sounded awesome, Dragons, Aliens, survival. But when I started reading the book, it was just kind of a mess.

2. Sound of Sirens by Jen Minkman (Review)
This book was fine, I just thought it was going to be about something else. This book takes place 100% on land. Not once is anything from or in the water make an appearance. I thought this book was going to be about actual sirens, it wasn't.

3. Need by Carrie Jones (Review)
I had been wanting to read this book for a long time. The cover is pretty, and the summary made the book sound really interesting, also I had a slight obsession of reading books about Fae and Faeries for a while, so when this book finally went on sale, I got it. And it did not deliver what the summary promised.

4. Black Ice by Becca Fitzpartick (Review)
I really enjoyed her Hush, Hush series. So when I heard about this book I was pretty eager to read it, but once I did I was left feeling unfulfilled. The story wasn't very good, half the characters were pointless. And the ending was just bleh.

5. The Legend of the Blue Eyes by Kristin McMicheal (Review)
At this point I should know better. Vampire books are a dime a dozen, so often authors try to force an "interesting" character rather than use the existing lore to tell their own story in an interesting way.

6. Grave Mercy by Robin LaFevers (Review)
There was nothing "wrong" with this book, or this story. I just read a book almost exactly like it a couple years ago. So, this book wasn't very original to me.

7. The Fifth Vertex by Kevin Hoffman (Review)
I just had a really hard time getting into it. It sounded interesting but I just got bored. And this is one reason why I want to cut back on my reading. Reading so many books in a short amount of time can make potentially good ones fall through the cracks. I make take another go at this book at a later date.

8. The Archived by Victoria Schwab (Review)
Put the pitchforks and torches down, I'm not saying that the book was bad, it just didn't do it for me, and didn't live up to the hype in my opinion. And this book was really hyped up. I didn't think the MC was very smart and the story was kind of predictable.

9. Girl of Nightmares by Kendare Blake (Review)
For me, it was just a huge step down in the story from the first book, which I loved. Half this book was really dull with the MC complaining and being all angst-y.

10. The Iron Trial by Holly Black and Cassandra Clare (Review)
I was expecting more from these authors. Before this I hadn't read a book my Holly Black yet, and now that I have I am even more disappointed with this book. People may argue that comparing it to Harry Potter because they both go to magic school is unfair. Yes, it would be if that was why I was comparing it to HP... but since that's not my reason. It was the characters and their personalities that made it feel that way. I just hope that it was only the first book that came off like that and the rest of the series is more original.

  1. I feel the same about The Iron Trial. I love both authors on their own and Harry Potter, but by the end I realized I was simply trying to count all of the Harry Potter references. As for Holly Black, I really love her Curse Workers series - it is fantastic! Think The Sopranos + Memento + Inception + gritty noir and criminalized magic. :)

I was also really disappointed by Black Ice. I didn't really care for Hush, Hush. It felt like a dumb D-horror movie. I was kind of sad that both the main characters came out alive.

    Check out my TTT.

    1. Hush, Hush was entertaining but was no great work of fiction.

I have yet to read her Curse Workers series, but I did read Coldest Girl in Coldtown last month, and it was amazing.
I didn't go into the book expecting it to be like HP, but the more I read the more similarities I started to notice. I really hope the sequel detaches it self from HP more for me.
