The Body Electric by Beth Revis

Godspeed
The future world is at peace.
Ella Shepherd has dedicated her life to using her unique gift—the ability to enter people’s dreams and memories using technology developed by her mother—to help others relive their happy memories.
But not all is at it seems.
Ella starts seeing impossible things—images of her dead father, warnings of who she cannot trust. Her government recruits her to spy on a rebel group, using her ability to experience—and influence—the memories of traitors. But the leader of the rebels claims they used to be in love—even though Ella’s never met him before in her life. Which can only mean one thing…
   Someone’s altered her memory.
Ella’s gift is enough to overthrow a corrupt government or crush a growing rebel group. She is the key to stopping a war she didn’t even know was happening. But if someone else has been inside Ella’s head, she cannot trust her own memories, thoughts, or feelings.
So who can she trust?

I received this ebook from NetGalley for review

Wow. What a book. I am a little loss for words. I have no idea what I was expecting this book to be, but I was not expecting that huge twist.

I knew going into this book it was going to be a little of a mind-eff because I read the Across the Universe trilogy, those books had moments that gave me all ranges of feelings and this book did the same. It is also set in the same universe, which is totally cool. We get to have a little taste of what life on earth is like while Amy and Elder were up to their shenanigans on GodSpeed, they even mention the ship in this book which was also pretty cool in my opinion.

Ella and Jack, they are not an Amy/Elder revamp. With some authors they sometimes just use the same personality over in other characters in different series/books. I am so so happy this did not happen. Ella started off kind of rough around the edges. But who can blame her? Her mom is dying from an incurable disease, and her father was murdered the year before.

Then she meets Jack, and everything she knows slowly comes into question. With this being a stand alone I was worried if everything could be wrapped up in 300+ pages, thankfully it was, even though it left me wanting more.

There were so many twists and surprises in this book, I loved it. There were a couple times when I wished I could reach inside the book and shake Ella for how frustrated she made me. And I liked that she didn't instantly believe everything Jack said, it took something really drastic for her to even bother to actually trust him and even then she still had some reservations about him.

It took a couple chapters for me to really get interested in the characters, but once I did I could not put this book down. It was amazing, I can't wait to read what Ms.Revis writes next.

  1. I am not sure what to think. The description did not pull me in at all but your review made it sound interesting.

    1. It is so good. Worth a read. I think you'd like it because its a standalone, and you don't need to have read the Across the Universe trilogy before reading this.

  2. I am all for stand alone books. No extra money to buy books right now and waiting for books in a series from the library is killer since usually a long list.
